Celebrating 75 years by supporting 75,000 children
When ALWS began in 1950, it was so generous Australians could walk alongside people in need… to bring care and love to those overlooked and forgotten by the world.
In 2025, we want to celebrate our 75th Anniversary by supporting 75,000 children with the essentials for a happy, healthy life – food, school and safety.
We need your help to bring care and love to these children. You can help to make sure they have nutritious food to grow up strong, schooling so they are free to flourish, and safety growing up in families that are independent and hopeful for the future.
Whether you step out in an ALWS Walk My Way, support a walker, or give a generous 75th gift, you will help 75,000 children step up to the life every child deserves.
“And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Jesus (Matthew 18:5)

‘I remember the kindnesses’
Margrit Friebel (nee Schmidt) was 6 years old when she arrived at Bonegilla, Wodonga with her family seeking safety and hope for a better future following the difficulties of World War 2.
“I remember the kindnesses… many people were kind to us as my father was a labourer and we did not have very much. I never had a new piece of clothing until I was in Grade 6!
Life was hard but good. It allowed me to discover many things about myself and to truly appreciate kindness and be happy to give to others.
My passion for volunteering in many ways and places in my life, is part of my way to pay back all the kindnesses that were shown to us as a family.”
This is the legacy of care and love that generous Australians continue to create through ALWS.

‘Love works hard’
Your kindness brings joy to families like Nella’s in Burundi. Living simply in a three-room house, Nella’s parents work hard as farmers to provide for the family of seven, with the children pitching in before and after school.
Nella says,“I get up at 6 in the morning. I fetch some water. The walk is 10 minutes away from my house, but sometimes I have to walk further. I carry the water on my head. I don’t have a meal before I go to school.
After school, I help my parents in the field or on our plot. I am trying to cultivate more beans. At home we have no electricity, so after dinner we go to bed.”
Nella is 9 years old. In communities like hers, many girls miss out on school and are forced to work at home. They may be married off early, and forced to have children before their bodies are ready. Giving a girl education is proven powerful protection.

Safe at School
The gift of education is one of the best ways to change a refugee child’s future.
Schools offer a safe space where children socialise with peers, have a routine and learn valuable skills that they can use wherever they’re settled. You give the gift of education… a gift that no one can ever take away!
Shelter and Food
You support single mothers like Josephine to create sustainable livelihoods, so they can afford a home and food for their children.
A survivor of an abusive relationship, Josephine works long days farming to care for her family. You provide agricultural training that improves yields and income so that Josephine’s children have a safe place to call home.
No One Misses Out!
Taban is 4 years old, and lives in Somalia with mild cerebral palsy that limits his mobility. His dad disowned Taban when he saw his impairment, and abandoned the family.
You help children living with disabilities, like Taban, by providing assistive devices, physiotherapy, food supplies and family support.

Children stepping out for Children
“As a family we’ve decided to support the Walk My Way events as a way to physically show our kids how small actions can have a large impact on other communities.
We were all amazed at the generosity of our wider family and friends who supported our fundraising efforts. All we had to do was ask and people donated generously… another great lesson for our kids.
Our kids loved the walk, and it was great to talk with friends along the way.
We will come back every year to keep highlighting to our kids the difference they can make in the world, and to show them the importance of walking beside others. We want this to become a family tradition for our family!
